“This internship has been quite the experience. I have studied politics and government for many years, and this internship gave me the opportunity to experience the things I had previously only read about in textbooks, and then use this knowledge to help serve the community. The unique structure of this internship also allowed me to see the duality of the legislative branch. In Washington, D.C., I experienced the struggle of passing bills in a partisan atmosphere. In the York office, it was serving the constituents on an individual level, and helping them navigate the laws regardless of which party passed them. Overall, it was a perfect blend of fun and service. I had the opportunity to meet Congressman Ron Paul, as well as assist with community meetings discussing President Obama’s deferred action executive order. It is an experience I will remember forever, and I encourage anyone and everyone to consider applying.”

-Alyssa Gross, 2012 Summer Intern

“I was granted the incredible opportunity to work with Congressman Platts and his amazing staff for ten short weeks, thanks to the 19th District Internship Association. Whether I was serving in the York District Office or Washington, D.C., I was constantly reminded what being a public servant truly means and consistently saw the positive impact of public service. I thoroughly enjoyed helping the constituents of the 19th District, as well as learning first-hand the daily operations of a Congressional office. Thanks again to the 19th District Internship Association, Congressman Platts, and his staff for an invaluable experience and skills that will surely assist me in the future.”

History:

The 4th Congressional District Internship Association (formerly the 19th District Internship Association) was created in 1977 as a community involvement, good government initiative to provide financial sponsorship for college students from the 4th Congressional District of Pennsylvania to work in the offices of our Congressman each summer. Internships give students a chance to be a part of government in action, with opportunities to attend hearings, draft response to constituent letters and research issues, as well as to provide staff support services.

Since its inception in 1977, the internship program has been extremely successful in annually sending a significant number of enthusiastic students to Washington for a first-class, first-hand experience with their government.

To support the program, Association members are invited to an annual reception in the 4th District to introduce the interns, new Association members, and guests to the current Association members. Occasionally the Association also organizes a bus trip to Washington for an exciting mix of business and pleasure. Association members and guests are invited to attend at their own expense.

The 4th Congressional District of Pennsylvania is comprised of Adams and York counties and parts of Cumberland and Dauphin counties. The 4th Congressional District Internship Association is not supported by the U.S. House of Representatives.

The 4th Congressional District Internship Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Donations are tax deductible.
